You already know that Cummins and Ram trucks have a storied history, but did you know that Cummins Inc. just produced its 3-millionth engine for Ram? The production occurred at the Columbus Engine Plant in Indiana and commemorated the three-decade-long partnership of Cummins engines in Ram trucks.
In 1988, the first Cummins-powered Ram truck was produced for the 1989 model year. Then in 1996, the first Cummins engine surpassed 200 horsepower. It didn’t take too long for another engine to exceed 500 pound-feet of torque. In fact, that occurred in 2001. Then, in 2007, the company launched its 6.7-liter engine that produced 350 horsepower. By 2013, the manufacturer had a 385-horsepower engine that pumped out 850 pound-feet of torque.
Now, the pair makes history once again. The new 6.7-liter inline turbo-diesel six-cylinder high-output motor has 400 horsepower and breaks the 1,000 pound-feet torque barrier. It also includes a new cylinder head, pistons, valve train and block to create additional power, a reduction in noise and vibration as well as superior fuel efficiency. It’s going to be the motor to own in Exeter, CA.
While we don’t yet know what truck will have the 3-millionth engine, we do know that it will be placed in a 2019 Ram 3500 Longhorn Crew Cab Dually 4×4. The manufacturer will release more information once the truck has been built. Until then, we can only enjoy the latest lineup of trucks near Woodlake, CA.
