The Battery Workforce Challenge, a collaboration between the U.S Department of Energy (DOE), Stellantis, and Argonne National Laboratory, has chosen the Ram ProMaster electric van as the vehicle for collegiate engineering teams to develop advanced electric vehicle (EV) battery packs.Â
This initiative provides students with hands-on experience in designing, building, and testing batteries for larger vehicles using the 2024 Ram ProMaster EV, which is specifically designed for electrification.
Introduced earlier this year, the Ram ProMaster EV is tailored for commercial use, with a unibody design that efficiently incorporates the production battery pack. This makes it an ideal platform for students to explore and innovate in the world of EV technology. The initiative, which started in 2023, involves 12 university teams from North America, each partnering with a local community college.Â
These teams were selected through a competitive process to participate in this prestigious competition, offering students the opportunity to work closely with industry experts and gain invaluable real-world engineering experience.
According to DOE Deputy Assistant Secretary Michael Berube, utilizing the Ram ProMaster EV in the competition is vital for advancing EV transportation technologies and aligns with the DOE’s efforts to promote a sustainable energy economy. Stellantis Senior Vice President Micky Bly also emphasizes the significance of the Ram ProMaster EV as a testing ground for innovative battery solutions and its potential to shape the future of mobility.
The competition will conclude in 2026, with winning teams receiving awards, industry recognition, and substantial prize money. Sponsors such as Our Next Energy, AVL, Dana Corporation, MathWorks, Analog Devices, Inc., and Gamma Technologies further support the initiative, highlighting the collective effort to foster innovation in EV technology.
As for the Ram ProMaster EV itself, it boasts a targeted range of up to 162 miles in city driving, making it the brand’s first fully electrified vehicle. With two mission-specific configurations available, including delivery and cargo models, the Ram ProMaster EV offers versatility and practicality for various commercial applications. The positioning of the battery under the floor ensures a flat cargo area, maintaining the vehicle’s interior space compared to traditional internal combustion engine vehicles.
