Since then, upgraded models from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, and Toyota have been offered in the full-size pickup truck market. Yet, only the Ram is honored with a place on our list of the Top 10 Trucks and SUVs for 2023. The most comfortable and best-driving pickup in the bunch is the Ram 1500. Its engine lineup consists of three different powertrain options, each using an eight-speed automatic transmission. The 260 horsepower turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 diesel, the 305 horsepower 3.6-liter V-6, and the 395 horsepower 5.7-liter V-8. Look for the 702 horsepower Ram 1500 TRX, reviewed separately, for even more power. The split-folding tailgate and lockable cargo bins in Ram’s bed are just the beginning of this half-tone ingenuity. Ram also offers the 1500 with a massive 12.0-inch infotainment screen for those looking to impress. The Ram 1500 is our favorite full-size pickup truck right now, thanks to its tremendous 12,750-pound maximum towing capacity and a strong preference for luxury.

A 48-volt hybrid system supports both engines, while the 5.7-liter Hemi V-8 is also offered without electric assistance. Even though Ram plans to discontinue making this engine in January 2023, diesel is still an option for 2023. Until then, the 1500 Tradesman, Big Horn, Lone Star, Laramie, Limited Longhorn, and Limited trims are equipped with the 260-hp diesel V-6. For those who enjoy exploring, the rugged Rebel model offers a beefier look and true off-road prowess. Every Ram 1500 has a superior ride thanks to a rear suspension that uses standard coil springs or optional air springs rather than the traditional leaf-spring setup found on domestic rivals. Even models with adjustable ride height are available, which improves off-road performance and fuel efficiency.

The Jeep Wrangler has always told a patriotic tale, taking cues from the military Willys Jeeps that contributed to the allies’ victory in World War II. The Wrangler has evolved into a civilian vehicle and is now competitive in the luxury sector in terms of price and features. Various fuel-swigging powertrains and two body styles help give the Wrangler broad appeal. A plug-in hybrid variant is also offered, but nothing is more distinctly American than the range-topping 470-hp V-8–powered Rubicon 392 model. As you might anticipate, choosing the smaller, two-door Wrangler over the bigger, four-door Unlimited model has a major impact on cargo capacity. Packing light is important if you’re going on an adventure with friends because we can only fit two carry-on cases behind the two-door back seat (compared to 10 for the four-door).
